Outer garments
People of the Middle Ages wore a second layer of clothing on top of
cotte or tunic. This outer garment was often called surcotte
(surcoat), and its primary function was to protect against cold. Later
surcotte was also worn as a ceremonial robe, and eventually it became
a part of fashion-wear.
